Wedgwood Christmas Plates & Mugs
Wedgwood issued it's first Christmas plate in 1969. This series of 8" blue and white jasperware Christmas plates featured landmarks from London and environs, with a border of holly. This series continued for 20 years, ending in 1988.
Two "Decade Plates" were issued to commemorate the first decade and second decade of the series. Each of the decade plates was issued both in two color and in three color jasperware editions, and bears miniature versions scenes from the ten plates th commemorates. Larger than the regular Christmas plates, they are approximately 10 inches diameter. I have some of the Decade Plates listed for sale at the bottom of this page.
At least three "Special Limited Edition" Christmas plates were issued as a part of this series. They are the same size and have the same scene as the regular Christmas plate for the corresponding year, but were done in "reversed colors" -- a white jasperware plate with colored jasperware decoration. The 1981 plate (Marble Arch) was issued in green on white in a limited edition of 750 plates (quite scarce). The 1982 plate (Lambeth Palace) was issued in blue on white in a limited edition of 10,000 plates, commissioned by Pennsylvania House. The 1984 plate (Constituion Hill) was issued in teal on white in a limited edition of unknown size. (I would like to BUY one of the 1984 teal plates.)
1981 Limited Edition of 750 -- $80
Beginning in 1971, Wedgwood issued Christmas Mugs to match the Christmas Plates. This series ran for 15 years, ending with the 1985 mug. They have the same motif as the corresponding Christmas plate, with the inscription CHRISTMAS, the date, and the building name . Blue & white jasper, 4.25 inches high, 3 inches in diameter, 5 inches wide including handle.
Wedgwood has issued a number of other Christmas series over the years. A series of five Christmas plates featuring English Cathedrals was issued between 1986 and 1990. Another series of five featuring popular Christmas Carols ran from 1991 to 1995. Both of these series were 7.25 inch plates, blue and white jasper, on a "Catherine shape" plate with molded edge. In 1990, a blue and white jasper Victorian Christmas series was begun featuring people engaged winter activities (such as skating); slightly larger than 8 inches, with the same holly border as the first Wedgwood Christmas series.
There have also been several Wedgwood Christmas series produced in Queensware (earthenware, not jasper) in full color, all approximately 8" in diameter. The London Landmarks series (Queensware, Catherine shape) was begun in 1980.
All of the following plates are EXCELLENT condition, some with original box. (Please ASK if the box is important to you.)
